Leonard Astrup and Donald Spoonheim graduated from NDSU Pharmacy School in 1949. At graduation, Leonard met Donald’s sister, Corrine, and within years the two pharmacists were brothers-in-law. Len moved to Austin the the fall of 1952 where he founded Sterling Drug. Len had a great business sense and today Sterling Drug Stores can be found in Minnesota and Iowa. Len was a member of the Lions Club, Sons or Norway, Masons and many other pharmacy endeavors. He and Corrine were active and generous members of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and Austin community. Don (“Doc”) received his degree in Pharmacology after returning from service in the US Navy during World War II. With two partners, Don established a small chain of drugstores in the Mt. Pleasant, SC area. “Doc” was an active Rotarian, and with his wife Mary Bingham Spoonheim as passionate community servant through Rotary, the Lutheran Church, and other civic endeavors.
