Dr. John D. and Donna Nalewaja
Dr. John D. Nalewaja joined NDSU in 1962 and retired as Professor in 1998 after an illustrious 36-year career. He advised 24 Ph.D. and 34 Masters of Science students. Scientists and post doctorate research associates all over the world joined his esteemed research program. He inspired thousands of students in the classroom by precisely teaching correct principles of weed science and plant physiology. He had an exceptional mind and ability to integrate biology, chemistry, physics, and plant growth and development to explain natural processes. He was gifted to identify and correct unfounded beliefs in plant science. He had a rare quality to ask unconsidered “What if…” questions then designed experiments to validate his theories. From this pattern of thinking he created inventions of adjuvants and surfactant that are used universally in crop production worldwide. His wisdom elevated him to leadership positions in many professional societies and was given the highest honor of Fellow in them. He authored more than 200 publications and
was an invited speaker worldwide. He was a moral and professional standard to follow and emulate.
The John D. and Donna Nalewaja Plant Science Graduate Scholarship was created to support and inspire students to replicate the values and qualities that he embodied; to develop an ability to think critically, discriminate against false information, and proclaim truth. The Nalewaja family has a strong connection to North Dakota and NDSU and support learning moral and professional education for all students.
