Greg and Denise McCarthy

Greg and Denise McCarthy

In 1998 the donors, Greg McCarthy (professor and chair of the NDSU chemistry
department) and Denise McCarthy (a national-award-winning teacher of physical
science in the Fargo Schools) established this Fund to address the need for
teachers of secondary science courses to have a stronger background in the
subjects they are teaching. Secondary science teachers are much more likely to
have majors in biology than in chemistry, physics, or geology/earth science. Thus,
the donors designated the award specifically for future teachers with degree
programs in the latter three specialties. With this 2021 update of the MOU, the
donors included in the Recipient Eligibility Criteria students with bachelor’s
degrees in one of the three designated majors who are pursuing a graduate
degree in Education with specialization in Teacher Licensure.
