M. L. Buchanan
M.L. Buchanan, a graduate of Oklahoma A&M College and the University of West Virginia, came to NDSU in 1945 and was designated to lead what eventually became the Department of Animal Science in 1946. He held that position for a period of 30 years. During his time in leadership, the department grew in both size and stature in many ways. His efforts included the combining of Departments of Animal Husbandry, Dairy Husbandry, and Poultry Husbandry, the move of the livestock units from locations on the campus prior to their location on 19th Avenue and the design and construction of Shepperd Arena.
