This scholarship fund is created in memory of Dr. Robert L Puyear, a Professor
Emeritus at NDSU.
Dr. Puyear discovered his passion for science and the natural world as a boy in
his home state of Montana. He received his bachelor’s degree at Montana State
University and pursued his graduate degrees in Corvallis, Oregon where he
received his PhD at Oregon State University.
In his professional life, he was a professor of Anatomy and Physiology – first at
Old Dominion University in Norfolk Virginia, and then North Dakota State
University – before retiring in 1999 due to Multiple Sclerosis. Retirement found
him devoting his energy to serving others. As President of the Board at the
Freedom Resource Center in Fargo for six years, he helped numerous disabled
people access services and gain independence. He then moved on to North
Dakota Assistive (Formerly IPAT) and was involved in developing programs that
provide access to assistive technologies; enabling disabled people to be as self-reliant
as possible. His philosophy in life was to never allow anyone to do for him,
what he could do for himself; no matter how hard that task might be.
In his memory, and with this endowment, we honor his love of science and
passion for helping others. The endowment will provide scholarships to graduate
students of need in the College of Sciences; the same program he taught for
many years.
