Nystuen Family Endowment Scholarship

Nystuen Family Endowment Scholarship

This scholarship endowment is in recognition of the heritage of the Nystuen family in North Dakota and at NDSU.
Albert Nystuen emigrated from Norway in 1903. He filed a homestead claim on a piece of land in the unplowed prairie of Divide County, North Dakota in 1904. He slept under a wagon the first summer and lived in his sod shanty during the next winter. Over the next several years he persevered and proved-up his homestead claim, and in 1908 received patent no. 9432 for 160 acres. He married Marie Wangen in 1913 and they reared 7 children on that homestead. The farm today continues as a fourth generation farm. This grass roots beginning and Albert’s resolve enable 3 of 7 of Albert and Marie’s children to graduate from NDSU. Peder, the eldest, graduated from NDSU in Agriculture in 1939, with MS in 1956, and worked in the College of Agriculture at NDSU for 35 years. Walter graduated in Agriculture in 1952, and Arne graduated in Electrical Engineering in 1958. Other family members who graduated over the next two generations were: Walter’s wife Coral, Home Economics 1952; Peder’s daughter, Gail, Pharmacy 1969; Peder’s son Paul, Mechanical Engineering 1972 and MS 1974; Peder’s son John, Agricultural Engineering 1975’ Walter’s son Robert, Agricultural Economics 1975; and Paul’s two sons Adam, University Studies 2008 and Peder, Industrial Engineering 2013.
The Nystuen family establishes this scholarship endowment in recognition of this heritage and wishes to offer others the same opportunity to learn and thrive at NDSU setting the stage for productive and rewarding careers.
